Sons and Soldiers: Deerfield, Massachusetts and the Civil War...

~ In Remembrance on Memorial Day ~

The Civil War monument in the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts is inscribed as a memorial to the 42 “lamented sons and soldiers who for their country and for Freedom laid down their lives in the war of the Great Rebellion.” These 42 were among the 303 individuals credited to Deerfield in the Union’s war records, 167, or 55 percent, of whom were Deerfield’s “sons”—men who resided in the town—and 136 of “soldiers”—recruits hired from near and far to fill the town’s quotas. The story of how these troops were raised, and of who they were, provides an instructive case study of one northern community’s war experience. It is essentially a record of how the community accommodated its behavior to constant national demands. At the outset of the war, Deerfield accepted responsibility for inspiring self-sacrifice among its citizens. By the end, the town expressed its commitment to the Union by assuming a collective financial burden. For the most part, Deerfield’s “sons” who went to war left home in 1861 and 1862. Starting in 1863, the town answered the Union’s calls primarily with “soldiers” who were not Deerfield natives, but this shift occurred within the context of constant local patriotism. When the “Great Rebellion began in 1861, Deerfield’s population was approximately 3,073, an increase of 27 percent over 1850. Roughly 17 percent, or 510, of Deerfield’s residents were men between the ages of twenty and forty-five, and therefore potentially eligible to serve in the Union army. Much of the population growth in this New England farming village resulted from the influx of native and immigrant laborers who came to work in the cutlery in Cheapside (the town’s northern section), on the railroads, or in smaller industries such as wallet making in South Deerfield. In this essay Deerfield refers to the area covered by Old Deerfield, South Deerfield, and Cheapside, all of which shared one town government. ~ Emily J. Harris

My great, great grandfather John Ware fought in the Civil War, volunteering from Deerfield in 1862 where he lived in what is now known as the Wells-Thorn House. He left behind his wife, Ellen, and a young son, Orlando, when he mustered into the Union Army. He returned in 1865 to find that his wife had left, and his sister Laura was caring for both his son and a daughter born after he went to war. Mary, who was my maternal great grandmother, was born upstairs in this historic house, where the Wares lived more than 100 years.~ JDHWB-R

Re-Invention of P.T. Barnum Can NEVER Be the President: Pt. 2

Phineas Taylor "P.T." Barnum (July 4, 1810 – April 7, 1891) was an American showman and businessman remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the Barnum & Bailey Circus.  Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me", and his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers". Barnum is widely, but erroneously, credited with coining the phrase "There's a sucker born every minute".

Born in Bethel, Connecticut, Barnum became a small-business owner in his early twenties, and founded a weekly newspaper, before moving to New York City in 1834. He embarked on an entertainment career, first with a variety troupe called "Barnum's Grand Scientific and Musical Theater", and soon after by purchasing Scudder's American Museum, which he renamed after himself. Barnum used the museum as a platform to promote hoaxes and human curiosities such as the Feejee mermaid and General Tom Thumb. In 1850 he promoted the American tour of singer Jenny Lind, paying her an unprecedented $1,000 a night for 150 nights. After economic reversals due to bad investments in the 1850s, and years of litigation and public humiliation, he used a lecture tour, mostly as a temperance speaker, to emerge from debt. His museum added America's first aquarium and expanded the wax-figure department.

Barnum served two terms in the Connecticut legislature in 1865 as a Republican for Fairfield. With the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution over slavery and African-American suffrage, Barnum spoke before the legislature and said, "A human soul, ‘that God has created and Christ died for,’ is not to be trifled with. It may tenant the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab or a Hottentot – it is still an immortal spirit". Elected in 1875 as Mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, he worked to improve the water supply, bring gas lighting to streets, and enforce liquor and prostitution laws. Barnum was instrumental in starting Bridgeport Hospital, founded in 1878, and was its first president.

The circus business was the source of much of his enduring fame. He established "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome", a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks", which adopted many names over the years. Barnum died in his sleep at home in 1891, and was buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, which he designed himself

Early life and career

Barnum was born in Bethel, Connecticut, the son of inn keeper, tailor and store-keeper Philo Barnum (1778–1826) and second wife Irene Taylor. He was the third great grandson of Thomas Barnum (1625–1695), the immigrant ancestor of the Barnum family in North America. His maternal grandfather Phineas Taylor was a Whig, legislator, landowner, justice of the peace, and lottery schemer, and he had a great influence on his favorite grandson. Barnum was adept at arithmetic but hated physical work. He started as a store-keeper, and he learned haggling and using deception to make a sale. He was involved with the first lottery mania in the United States. At the age of 19, he married Charity Hallett.

The young husband had several businesses: a general store, a book auctioning trade, real estate speculation, and a statewide lottery network. He became active in local politics and advocated against blue laws promulgated by Calvinists who sought to restrict gambling and travel. Barnum started a weekly paper in 1829, The Herald of Freedom, in Danbury, Connecticut. His editorials against church elders led to libel suits and a prosecution which resulted in imprisonment for two months, but he became a champion of the liberal movement upon his release. In 1834, when lotteries were banned in Connecticut, cutting off his main income, Barnum sold his store and moved to New York City. In 1835 he began as a showman with his purchase and exhibition of a blind and almost completely paralyzed slave woman, Joice Heth, claimed by Barnum to have been George Washington's nurse, and to be over 160 years old.

Funhouse showman

Joice Heth died in 1836, no more than 80 years old. After a year of mixed success with his first variety troupe called "Barnum's Grand Scientific and Musical Theater," followed by the Panic of 1837 and three years of difficult circumstances, he purchased Scudder's American Museum, at Broadway and Ann Street, New York City, in 1841. Barnum improved the attraction, renamed "Barnum's American Museum," upgrading the building and adding exhibits, and it became a popular showplace. Barnum added a lighthouse lamp which attracted attention up and down Broadway and flags along the roof's edge that attracted attention in daytime. From between the upper windows, giant paintings of animals drew stares from pedestrians. The roof was transformed to a strolling garden with a view of the city, where he launched hot-air balloon rides daily. A changing series of live acts and curiosities, including albinos, giants, midgets, "fat boys," jugglers, magicians, exotic women, detailed models of cities and famous battles, and, eventually, a menagerie of animals were added to the exhibits of stuffed animals

Fiji mermaid and Tom Thumb

In 1842, Barnum introduced his first major hoax, a creature with the head of a monkey and the tail of a fish, known as the "Feejee" mermaid. Barnum leased the "mermaid" from fellow museum owner Moses Kimball of Boston. Kimball became his friend, confidant, and collaborator. Barnum described his hoaxes and justified the act of perpetrating them by saying they were "advertisements to draw attention...to the Museum. I don't believe in duping the public, but I believe in first attracting and then pleasing them." Later, he crusaded against fraudsters (see below). Barnum followed that with the exhibition of Charles Stratton, the dwarf "General Tom Thumb" ("the Smallest Person that ever Walked Alone") who was then four years of age but was stated to be 11. With heavy coaching and natural talent, the boy was taught to imitate people from Hercules to Napoleon. By five, he was drinking wine and by seven smoking cigars for the public's amusement. Though exploited, Tom Thumb enjoyed his job and had a good relationship with Barnum, free of bitterness.

In year 1843 Barnum hired the traditional Native American dancer fu-Hum-Me, the first of many Native Americans he presented. During 1844–45, Barnum toured with Tom Thumb in Europe and met Queen Victoria, who was amused and saddened by the little man, and the event was a publicity coup. It opened the door to visits from royalty across Europe including the Czar of Russia and let him acquire dozens of attractions, including automatons and other mechanical marvels. He was almost able to buy the birth home of William Shakespeare. Barnum was having the time of his life, and for all of the three years abroad with Thumb, except for a few months when his serious, nervous, and straitlaced wife joined him, he had piles of spending money, food and drink, and lived a carefree existence. On his return to New York, he went on a spending spree, buying other museums, including Peale's museum in Philadelphia, the nation's first major museum. By late 1846, Barnum's Museum was drawing 400,000 visitors a year.

Jenny Lind

A risky decision of Barnum's established him as a legitimate impresario. During his Tom Thumb tour of England, Barnum had become aware of the popularity of Jenny Lind, the "Swedish Nightingale". Lind's career was at its height in Europe. She was unpretentious, shy and devout, and possessed a crystal-clear soprano voice projected with a wistful quality and earnestness that audiences found touching. Barnum had never heard her and conceded to being unmusical himself.  He approached her to sing in America at $1,000 a night for 150 nights, all expenses paid by him. He knew that his risk was great, noting: "'The public' is a very strange animal, and although a good knowledge of human nature will generally lead a caterer of amusement to hit the people right, they are fickle and ofttimes perverse." But Barnum was confident that her reputation for morality and philanthropy could be turned to good use in his publicity.

Lind demanded the fee in advance. Barnum agreed, and she accepted the offer, which would permit her to raise a huge fund for charities, principally endowing schools for poor children in Sweden. To raise the fee, Barnum borrowed heavily on his mansion and his museum. Still slightly short, he persuaded a Philadelphia minister, who thought that Lind would be a good influence on American morals, to lend him the final $5,000. The contract also gave Lind the option of withdrawing from the tour after sixty or one hundred contracts, paying Barnum $25,000 if she did so. Lind and her small company sailed to America in September 1850. As a result of Barnum's months of preparations, Lind was a celebrity even before she arrived in the U.S., and close to 40,000 greeted her at the docks and another 20,000 at her hotel, the press was in attendance, and "Jenny Lind items" were available. When she realized how much money Barnum stood to make from the tour, Lind insisted on a new agreement, which he signed on September 3, 1850. This gave her the original fee plus the remainder of each concert's profits after Barnum's $5,500 management fee was paid. She was determined to accumulate as much money as possible for her charities.

The tour began with a concert at Castle Garden on September 11, 1850 and was a major success, recouping Barnum four times his investment. Washington Irving proclaimed, "She is enough to counterbalance, of herself, all the evil that the world is threatened with by the great convention of women. So God save Jenny Lind!" Tickets for some of her concerts were in such demand that Barnum sold them by auction. The enthusiasm of the public was so strong that the American press coined the term "Lind mania". The blatant commercialism of Barnum's ticket auctions distressed Lind, and for her second concert and thereafter, she persuaded him to make a substantial number of tickets available at reduced prices.

On the tour, Barnum's publicity always preceded Lind's arrival and whipped up enthusiasm (he had up to 26 journalists on his payroll). After New York, the company toured the east coast of America, with continued success, and later took in Cuba and the southern states of the U.S. By early 1851, Lind had become uncomfortable with Barnum's relentless marketing of the tour, and she invoked a contractual right to sever her ties with him. They parted amicably, and she continued the tour for nearly a year under her own management. Lind gave 93 concerts in America for Barnum, earning her about $350,000; Barnum netted at least $500,000.

Diversified leisure-time activities

Using profits from the Lind tour, Barnum's next challenge was to change public attitudes about the theater. Widely seen as 'dens of evil,' Barnum wanted to position them as palaces of edification and delight, and as respectable middle-class entertainment. He built the city's largest and most modern theater, naming it the "Moral Lecture Room." He hoped this would avoid seedy connotations and attract a family crowd and win the approval of the moral crusaders of New York City. He started the nation's first theatrical matinées, to encourage families and to lessen the fear of crime. He opened with The Drunkard, a thinly disguised temperance lecture (he had become a teetotaler after returning from Europe). He followed that with melodramas, farces, and historical plays, put on by highly regarded actors. He watered down Shakespearean plays and others such as Uncle Tom's Cabin to make them family entertainment.

He organized flower shows, beauty contests, dog shows, poultry contests, but the most popular were baby contests (fattest baby, handsomest twins, etc.). In 1853, he started a pictorial weekly newspaper Illustrated News and a year later completed his autobiography, which through many revisions, sold more than one million copies. Mark Twain loved it but the British Examiner thought it "trashy" and "offensive" and "inspired...nothing but sensations of disgust...and sincere pity for the wretched man who compiled it."

In the early 1850s, Barnum began investing to develop East Bridgeport, Connecticut. He made substantial loans to the Jerome Clock Company, to get it to move to his new industrial area. But by 1856, the company went bankrupt, taking Barnum's wealth with it. This started four years of litigation and public humiliation. Ralph Waldo Emerson proclaimed that Barnum's downfall showed "the gods visible again" and other critics celebrated Barnum's moral comeuppance. But his friends supported him, and Tom Thumb, now touring on his own, offered his services and they undertook another European tour. Barnum also started a lecture tour, mostly as a temperance speaker. By 1860, he emerged from debt and built a mansion "Lindencroft" (his palace "Iranistan" had burnt down in 1857) and he resumed ownership of his museum

Despite critics who predicted he could not revive the magic, Barnum went on to greater success. He created America's first aquarium and expanded the wax figure department. His "Seven Grand Salons" demonstrated the Seven Wonders of the World. He created a rogues gallery. The collections expanded to four buildings and he published a "Guide Book to the Museum" which claimed 850,000 'curiosities.'

Late in 1860, the Siamese Twins, Chang and Eng, came out of retirement (they needed more money to send their numerous children to college). The Twins had had a touring career on their own and went to live on a North Carolina plantation with their families and slaves, under the name of "Bunker." They appeared at Barnum's Museum for six weeks. Also in 1860, Barnum introduced the "man-monkey" William Henry Johnson, a microcephalic black dwarf who spoke a mysterious language created by Barnum. In 1862, he discovered the giantess Anna Swan and Commodore Nutt, a new Tom Thumb, with whom Barnum visited President Abraham Lincoln at the White House. During the Civil War, Barnum's museum drew large audiences seeking diversion from the conflict. He added pro-Unionist exhibits, lectures, and dramas, and he demonstrated commitment to the cause. For example, in 1864 Barnum hired Pauline Cushman, an actress who had served as a spy for the Union, to lecture about her "thrilling adventures" behind Confederate lines. Barnum's Unionist sympathies incited a Confederate arsonist to start a fire in 1864. On July 13, 1865, Barnum's American Museum burned to the ground from a fire of unknown origin. Barnum re-established the Museum at another location in New York City, but this too was destroyed by fire in March 1868. This time the loss was too great, and Barnum retired from the museum business.

Circus king

Barnum did not enter the circus business until he was 60 years old. In Delavan, Wisconsin in 1870 with William Cameron Coup, he established "P. T. Barnum's Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Hippodrome," a traveling circus, menagerie and museum of "freaks." It went through various names: "P.T. Barnum's Travelling World's Fair, Great Roman Hippodrome and Greatest Show On Earth," and after an 1881 merger with James Bailey and James L. Hutchinson, "P.T. Barnum's Greatest Show On Earth, And The Great London Circus, Sanger's Royal British Menagerie and The Grand International Allied Shows United," soon shortened to "Barnum & Bailey's." This entertainment phenomenon was the first circus to display 3 rings, which made it the largest circus the world had ever seen. The show's first primary attraction was Jumbo, an African elephant he purchased in 1882 from the London Zoo. The Barnum and Bailey still contained similar acts as to his Traveling Menagerie: acrobats, freak shows, and the world famous General Tom Thumb. Despite more fires, train disasters, and other setbacks, Barnum plowed ahead, aided by circus professionals who ran the daily operations. He and Bailey split up again in 1885, but came back together in 1888 with the "Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show On Earth," later "Barnum & Bailey Circus," which toured the world.

Barnum became known as the Shakespeare of Advertising, due to his innovative and impressive ideas. He knew how to draw patrons in, by giving them a glimpse of something that had never been seen before. He was, at times, accused of being deceptive and promoting false advertising. He simply indulged in the truth and made it seem more appealing.

Barnum was one of the very first circus owners to move his circus by train (and probably the very first to buy his own train). His friend, W.C. Coup, helped him get railroad cars to make his tour traveling easier. Given the lack of paved highways in America, this turned out to be a shrewd business move that vastly enlarged Barnum's geographical reach. In this new field, Barnum leaned more on the advice of Coup, Bailey and other business partners, most of whom were young enough to be his sons.

Author and debunker

Barnum wrote several books, including Life of P.T. Barnum (1854), The Humbugs of the World (1865), Struggles and Triumphs (1869), and The Art of Money-Getting (1880).

One of Barnum's more successful methods of self-promotion was mass publication of his autobiography. Barnum eventually gave up his copyright to allow other printers to sell inexpensive editions. At the end of the 19th century the number of copies printed was second only to the New Testament in North America.

Often referred to as the "Prince of Humbugs," Barnum saw nothing wrong in entertainers or vendors using hype (or "humbug," as he termed it) in promotional material, as long as the public was getting value for money. However, he was contemptuous of those who made money through fraudulent deceptions, especially the spiritualist mediums popular in his day, testifying against noted spirit photographer William H. Mumler in his trial for fraud. Prefiguring illusionists Harry Houdini and James Randi, Barnum exposed "the tricks of the trade" used by mediums to cheat the bereaved. In The Humbugs of the World, he offered $500 to any medium who could prove power to communicate with the dead.

Politician and reformer

Barnum was significantly involved in politics, focusing on race, slavery, and sectionalism in the period leading up to the American Civil War. He had some of his first success as an impresario through his slave Joice Heth. Around 1850, he was involved in a hoax about a weed that would turn black people white.

Barnum was a producer and promoter of blackface minstrelsy. Barnum's minstrel shows often used double-edged humor. While replete with black stereotypes, Barnum's shows satirized as in a stump speech in which a black phrenologist (like all minstrel performers, a white man in blackface) made a dialect speech parodying lectures given at the time to "prove" the superiority of the white race: "You see den, dat clebber man and dam rascal means de same in Dutch, when dey boph white; but when one white and de udder's black, dat's a grey hoss ob anoder color."

Promotion of minstrel shows led to his sponsorship in 1853 of H.J. Conway's politically watered-down stage version of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin; the play, at Barnum's American Museum, gave the story a happy ending, with Tom and other slaves freed. The success led to a play based on Stowe's Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp. His opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act which supported slavery, of 1854 led him to leave the Democratic Party to become a member of the new anti slavery Republican Party. He had evolved from a man of common stereotypes of the 1840s to a leader for emancipation by the Civil War.

1879 Connecticut anti-contraception law

While he claimed "politics were always distasteful to me," Barnum was elected to the Connecticut legislature in 1865 as Republican representative for Fairfield and served four terms. In the debate over slavery and African-American suffrage with the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, Barnum spoke before the legislature and said, "A human soul, ‘that God has created and Christ died for,’ is not to be trifled with. It may tenant the body of a Chinaman, a Turk, an Arab or a Hottentot – it is still an immortal spirit." Barnum was notably the legislative sponsor of a law enacted by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1879 that prohibited the use of “any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception" that remained in effect in Connecticut until being overturned in 1965 by the U.S. Supreme Court Griswold v. Connecticut decision.

Barnum ran for the United States Congress in 1867 and lost to his third cousin William Henry Barnum. In 1875, Barnum as mayor of Bridgeport, Connecticut, worked to improve the water supply, bring gas lighting to streets, and enforce liquor and prostitution laws. Barnum was instrumental in starting Bridgeport Hospital, founded in 1878, and was its first president.

Profitable philanthropy

Barnum enjoyed what he publicly dubbed "profitable philanthropy." In Barnum's own words: "I have no desire to be considered much of a philanthropist...if by improving and beautifying our city Bridgeport, Connecticut, and adding to the pleasure and prosperity of my neighbors, I can do so at a profit, the incentive to 'good works' will be twice as strong as if it were otherwise." In line with this philosophy was Barnum's pursuit of major American museums and spectacles. Less known are Barnum's significant contributions to Tufts University. Barnum was appointed to the Board of Trustees prior to the University's founding and made several significant contributions to the fledgling institution. The most noteworthy example of this was his gift in 1883 of $50,000 ($2,000,000 in 2013), to establish a museum and hall for the Department of Natural History, which today houses the department of biology. Because of the relationship between Barnum and Tufts, Jumbo the elephant became the school's mascot, and Tufts students are known as "Jumbos."

Death

Barnum suffered a stroke in 1890 during a performance and died on April 7, 1891. He was buried in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport, Connecticut, a cemetery he designed.

Legacy

Barnum built four mansions in Bridgeport, Connecticut: Iranistan, Lindencroft, Waldemere, and Marina. Iranistan was the most notable: a fanciful and opulent Moorish Revival splendor designed by Leopold Eidlitz with domes, spires and lacy fretwork, inspired by the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, England. This mansion was built 1848 but burned down in 1857. The Marina Mansion was demolished by the University of Bridgeport in order to build their cafeteria.

At his death, most critics had forgiven him and he was praised for good works. Barnum was hailed as an icon of American spirit and ingenuity, and was perhaps the most famous American in the world. Just before his death, he gave permission to the Evening Sun to print his obituary, so that he might read it. On April 7 he asked about the box office receipts for the day; a few hours later, he was dead.

In 1893, a statue in his honor was placed at Seaside Park, by the water in  Bridgeport. Barnum had donated the land for this park in 1865.

His circus was sold to Ringling Brothers on July 8, 1907 for $400,000 (about $8.5 million in 2008 dollars). The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circuses ran separately until they merged in 1919 forming the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

The Tufts University Biology Building is named in honor of Barnum. Jumbo eventually became the mascot of Tufts University, in honor of Barnum's 1889 donation of the elephant's stuffed hide.

In 1936, for the centennial of the city of Bridgeport, Connecticut, his portrait was used for the obverse of the commemorative Bridgeport Half Dollar.

Walt Kelly, who grew up in Bridgeport, named the Pogo character P.T. Bridgeport after Barnum, and endowed the circus operator bear with a Barnum-like outsized personality and word balloons with lettering that resembled 19th century circus posters giving graphic depiction of the sort of colorful language Barnum was prone to use.

To honor the 200th anniversary of Barnum's birth, the Bethel Historical Society commissioned a life-size sculpture, created by local resident David Gesualdi, that stands outside the public library. The statue was dedicated on September 26, 2010.

The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry company operates three vessels that run across the Long Island Sound between Port Jefferson, New York, and Bridgeport. One of those three ferry boats is named "The P.T. Barnum."

Compare this biographical life sketch of the legendary 19th century showman, and clearly P.T. Barnum mellowed with age and evolved morally, as the use of deception to make a sale in his early days of business was transcended via political responsibility and philanthropy. This essential transformation of character through personal growth is not apparent in "the Donald" as he moves through his life phases as a real estate tycoon, then as a television personality, and now he is the presumptive Republican nominee for President. The Re-Invention of P.T. Barnum Can NEVER Be the President!

"You're Fired!"
Elizabeth Warren Turns Up the Anti-Donald Trump Volume

By ALAN RAPPEPORT - MAY 25, 2016

Senator Elizabeth Warren delivered a scalding rebuke of Donald J. Trump on Tuesday night, describing him as a “a small, insecure, money grubber” as she escalated her feud with the presumptive Republican nominee.

In a rousing speech at the Center for Popular Democracy’s annual gala in Washington, Ms. Warren embraced her role as one of Mr. Trump’s fiercest critics. She assailed him unsparingly as a heartless tax dodger cozying up with Wall Street who preyed on the misfortunes of Americans stricken by the financial crisis.

“Donald Trump was drooling over the idea of a housing meltdown because it meant he could buy up a bunch more property on the cheap,” said Ms. Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts. “What kind of a man does that?”

She went on to argue that Mr. Trump was rooting for people to lose their jobs and be kicked out of their houses.

“I’ll tell you exactly what kind of a man does that,” Ms. Warren added. “It is a man who cares about no one but himself. A small, insecure money-grubber who doesn’t care who gets hurt so long as he makes a profit off it.”

Ms. Warren’s attacks on Mr. Trump echo those leveled by Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, who has seized on comments that he made a decade ago when he suggested that the collapse of the housing market was a good investing opportunity. Ms. Warren has been a frequent critic of Mr. Trump on social media and has been increasingly taking him on in public forums.

On Tuesday night, Ms. Warren also suggested that Mr. Trump pays no taxes while reaping the benefits of American public infrastructure. And she hit him for saying that he would undo the Dodd-Frank financial regulation legislation, wondering if Mr. Trump could even name three things about the law.

“Donald Trump is worried about helping poor little Wall Street?” Ms. Warren said. “Let me find the world’s smallest violin to play a sad, sad song.”

Calling Mr. Trump an “urgent threat” to the country, Ms. Warren painted him as someone who inherited a fortune from his father, then grew it by swindling people and skipping out on his debts.

Mr. Trump has responded to charges that he sought to profit from the recession by claiming that he was doing what he was supposed to do as a successful businessman. On Wednesday, he called Ms. Warren “goofy” in a post on Twitter and said she has done less in the Senate than almost anyone else.

“All talk, no action!” Mr. Trump said.

TURN OFF THE TELEVISION AND GO TO THE INTERNET

Bernie Black-Out continues as 31,000 Plus crowd packs California Stadium BEYOND Capacity:

May 10, 2016 by Phil Creek

According to the DNC Elites and the pundits in Main Stream Media, Bernie Sanders is a hopeless cause and needs to just go away. But when over 31,000 Bern-ers packed a stadium in Sacramento, CA on Monday night to hear what the 2016 contender for the democratic nomination had to say, the Main Stream Media had nothing to say... and nothing to show.

In a now all to familiar tactic, good news for Bernie equals NO news on the air. When Bernie Sanders won a very important double-digit victory in the state of Washington, MSNBC barely let it crawl across the bottom of their screen while they broadcast reruns of " Lock-Up". On CNN Bernie's Washington State victory didn't even rate that, as CNN broadcast a religious docu-drama instead.

Given the fact that CNN is owned by Time-Warner, one of the top ten corporate donors to the Clinton campaign, it isn't surprising that CNN is tepid at best in regards to anything pro-Bernie. That MSNBC's parent company, Com-Cast. ALSO has deep motives ( not having to pay ANY taxes on corporate profits "out-sourced" to over-seas banks ) to keep Bernie Sanders out of the Oval Office is also no big secret. That one of MSNBC's lead talking heads, Chris Mathews, had a wife running for congress and receiving campaign funding from some of Hillary's wealthiest donors ( none of which lived in the congressional district she was running for ) didn't help much.

Despite the media black-out of Bernie and the constant blather for the wooly-haired senator's withdrawal from the race, Bernie Sanders, and his army of troops ( including some 9 million registered voters to date ) are determined to make the DNC and the corporate media realize they will NOT be ignored and will NOT be denied.

SOCIALISM? WE'RE ALREADY A SOCIAL DEMOCRACY!

The truth is, Social Democracy is the government we have. Only, it's corrupt, badly corrupt. Some people think it is unrealistic, far fetched, not likely, I call this defeatism (coupled with media induced denial). I hope we can all come to see the principles in this video regarded as common sense rights, not because I want to redistribute wealth, or move away from hierarchy, but simply because every person should have the right to a better life in this prosperous, abundant human world.

Corruption in this country goes back pretty darn far. But the history of corruption from "Campaign Finance" and what we see to be bought politicians, rigged elections, and dirty legislation stems from a famous Supreme Court case known as Buckley vs Valeo in 1976. In this case the court directly loosened limits on Campaign Finance laws and indirectly undermined the building democratic election process in the United States.

This court case lead to the eventuality of another famous Supreme Court case in 2010 known as Citizens United vs Federal Election Commission (or as we call it on the facebook simply "Citizens United") which deregulated spending in political elections by allowing unions and corporations to spend an unlimited amount of money on any candidate they choose. This is also where the term "SuperPAC" comes from.

This system guarantees that those with large sums of money will have a stronger vote and a louder voice than any amount of people can have if they don't have money backing them up. We see this clearly, as Micah White points out in his book "the End of Protest", with recent large protests. One such protest was the Anti-War movement of 2003. The largest global protest in human history meant to speak out and prevent the invasion of Iraq. Up to 11million people protested in 60 different countries all over the world and still governments lead by the US went to war on obviously false allegations.

We also see evidence of this blatant disregard for the populous with protest movements like Occupy where the media and government seemed more inclined to abuse protesters expressing their constitutional right then listen to them. These people were mostly educated, middle-class Americans and the government still largely ignored their outcry for a more fair and balanced political system. The confusing rhetoric and appalling display of this probably rigged political election is yet another example of these court rulings giving money a louder voice than an American citizen.

I stand by the notion that this disgustingly corrupt political system is the biggest issue we have. This is the issue which will define my vote this coming election. As I see it, this is the issue that is preventing livable wages, a just health care system, a respectful education system, and an ethical economic system. That is to say, that I think we will never have these systems corrected until we vote, and vote in, a non-corrupt political system.

If you read this whole bit, I'm proud of you. I hope you have a good day.

Sincerely,
Daniel

Make Viral! Urgent Message for the Ground Crew - May 1, 2016

Galactic Connection
Published on May 2, 2016

Alexandra Meadors puts out an urgent alert to all the Ground Crew, no matter what role you play or mission you have, but in particular all who work with grids, portals, and stargates, to take heed of this major call to action.

Here is the message from Jeff as read out by Alexandra:

"As I write this, actions are being perpetrated for harmonically inducing rare frequency matching that will open portals lying on key dynamic crossover points of the earth lay lines. Frequencies are being brought to bear that will encode these earth sections in such a way to transpose their coordinates with that of higher dimensional cross over points not existing on the earth plane. It will be calibrating these points with frequency harmonics that do not occur here in this reality. By doing this, it will enrapture our awareness to then be pulled or sucked up through these portals. This will have the effect of disallowing our own knowingness to occur HERE, and instead bring our awareness into a dynamic that cannot be sustained properly. This will dislodge our seat of awareness and make us SEEM incompatible with our own dynamic as we exist. This will mostly challenge those who have the highest development of awareness, and will create disillusioned thought forms from this portal opening. This action is occurring right now.

A direct remedy for this, is to intend a very high dynamic light be brought within the singularity of Oneness existing at the core of these harmonic intrusions. Set your intention to obliterate every energetic thought-form creating this dilution of control. Form a blanket of awareness around these beings creating this tragic pollution to our reality. Then with your own dynamic Will gathered into your thoughts, send an outflow that will expel this incursion from our reality. Send a trajectory of your being's light quotient directly into the Heart space of those sanctioning this divisive action.

This will stop, absolutely, their ability to contort our awareness and frequency-modulate our existence into that which should not occur. This action must continue until there is no longer capacity for this to happen. And so it is.

Jeff"

The Election of 2016... or is this The Election of 1860 Revisited?

I awoke from sleep this morning with no conscious recollection of having a dream yet my mind was reviewing what I knew of the Presidential election of 1860 and how the Democratic Party was split into two opposing factions, between Douglas in the North and Breckinridge in the South, giving the White House to the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln.  It devolved into secession of the Southern States and then four years of Civil war...

Now, in 2016, the Democratic Party appears bitterly divided between Hillary Clinton, an establishment candidate, who is the wife of two-term U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State under current President Barak Obama, and Bernie Sanders, the Independent Senator from Vermont who describes himself as a Democratic Socialist, and is running as a Democrat in the primaries under what he says is a rigged political system.

Meanwhile Donald Trump, the outspoken and obtuse Republican candidate, is now the only one left and is considered the presumptive nominee. Do I see any parallels here with 1860? Yes I do! What is going to happen at the Democratic National Convention come July in Philadelphia? Pundits say Bernie Sanders will "fall into line" behind Hillary Clinton and unify the party... because the alternative right now is really unthinkable: Donald Trump in the White House with his divisive rhetoric and threat to build a wall between the United States and Mexico to stem the tide of illegal immigration from south of the border! If "the Donald" is our next President, then all bets are off and history could be repeating itself...

That only happens IF the Democrats don't unify behind their chosen nominee. If Bernie is not able to "pull a White Rabbit out of a tall silk top hat" and lead his party to victory over Donald Trump and the Republicans, I have doubts that Hillary Clinton has the momentum in her campaign to do this, yet she has the completed work of the United States Supreme Court with their Citizens United decision watching her back, so who knows? I would rather see a multitude of ordinary people making campaign contributions for a true progressive candidate, such as Bernie Sanders, put a President in the White House than let the 1% with their Super-Pac deep pockets determine the outcome of this election. I really do wonder if the dream I had last night was telling me something about how 1860 relates to 2016 ~ JDHWB-R

Native Americans for Bernie Sanders at Pine Ridge Reservation!

Press Release: Sanders at Pine Ridge Reservation Calls for ‘New Relationship’ with Native Americans

May 12, 2016

PINE RIDGE, S.D. – Calling for “a new relationship with the Native American people,” U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on Thursday came to this Oglala Lakota reservation to put a spotlight on poverty and to detail proposals to create jobs, raise wages and reduce growing wealth and income inequality in America.

“There is a lot of pain in the community,” Sanders told a forum that focused on poverty, inadequate health care and schools. “We’ve got a lot of work to do but nothing ever good happens if people give up. You’ve got to stand up and be involved in the political process.”

“The reason we are here today is to try to understand what is going on in Pine Ridge and other reservations,” Sanders said. “There are a lot of problems here. Poverty is much too high. There are not enough decent jobs in the area. The health care system is inadequate. And we need to fundamentally change the relationship between the U.S. government and the Native American community.”

The reservation sprawls across three counties that are among the poorest in the United States. Forty-nine percent of residents in Pine Ridge live below the poverty line including 61 percent of those under the age of 18. Per capita annual income is just $6,286. The infant mortality rate on the reservation is five times greater than the national average. Life expectancy is just 48 years for men and 52 for women. The high school dropout rate is 70 percent and the teacher turnover rate is eight times the national average.

“In America today, we have a massive level of income and wealth inequality. We are living in a country where some people have unbelievable wealth but a lot of other people are living in dire poverty,” Sanders said.

He called for a federal jobs program to put millions of people back to work. He has introduced legislation to create 13 million good-paying jobs by investing $1 trillion in repairing the nation’s crumbling roads, bridges, water systems, schools and other infrastructure projects.

Sanders also said the federal minimum wage should go up. “In America today, many people are working for wages that are much too low. That is why we have to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour,” he said.

Told that the Indian Health Service is a “failure,” Sanders called for the United States to join the rest of the industrialized world and provide health care as a right for all Americans. He also said he would lower sky-high prices for prescription drugs and push for tuition-free public colleges and universities.

Speaking at the site of the Wounded Knee massacre in 1890, Sanders said the United States and Native Americans must develop “a new relationship.” He added, “We owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.”

All over this country, Native Americans have suffered far too much, and for far too long. They deserve our respect, and they deserve to have a voice, so that their struggles can be brought to the forefront. Join the political revolution at www.berniesanders.com

From Slave to Sovereign...

Many people have taken to using the word with only a vague idea of what it is.

The dictionary defines it as follows:

Sovereign, from Latin supernes (heavenly), superus (higher)
A person who has supreme power or authority

What exactly does it mean to be sovereign?

As the dictionary definition suggests, a sovereign is someone who has supreme power or authority. In the context, it means that as a sovereign, you are the one with the highest authority over yourself. Nobody can rule over you because you do not allow it. Nothing stands between you and Creator/Source, no priest or other religious figure and no government.

Not accepting any authority above oneself sounds great and seriously powerful, which is probably why sovereignty has become a buzzword in the alternative media. However, with great power comes great responsibility.

It is a lengthy process. A painful one, even dirty. Definitely lonely. And it is deeply internal. It starts, perhaps, with a niggling at the back of your mind. Something is off. There has to be more to life than work, eat, and sleep. Nobody should tell me how to live my life… Then you realise you can’t vote any longer because voting means you accept someone as master, someone above you. Someone with authority over you. You need that like a hole in your head. When you casually mention it amongst friends who are having a heated discussion of who the best candidate is, they all come down on you as one, all political debate forgotten. How can you not vote? It’s your civil duty! If you don’t vote, don’t complain if you don’t like what the government is doing!

You can’t quite find the words to explain that no matter who is in power will not do what you like. For what you like is a peaceful world in which everyone knows right from wrong, everyone knows we are all born equal, and by design, no government will ever allow that to happen.

Step by slow step, you chip away on everything that is not your own authority.

You throw the reminder for your next disease-prevention test in the garbage where it belongs. Because you know that no matter how long someone studied to obtain that doctorate, they will not know your body anywhere near as well as you do, even if the tremendous level of corruption and the outright genocide agenda of the medical system hasn’t occurred to you yet.

You take your children out of school, knowing that even the best private school will offer nothing but indoctrination, and you can no longer justify sacrificing your children to a society that actively supports slavery.

Your large circle of friends has diminished to a tiny one; and even those friends remaining are there more out of morbid curiosity than friendship. Your once vibrant social life has dwindled, and you spend your evenings in the quiet and peaceful space of your home, looking for ways to leave your managerial position at the flagship branch of the Retailer of the Year that has outsourced its manufacture to Asia where safety regulations are nonexistent and children preferred as labour because they are less costly.

You question the lawfulness of taxes, for what else pays for all the wars? Other taxes come into your focus, and you feel a little sick when you realise that the money you make from your 40-hours-a-week hard work contributes roughly 80% to the national tax gain, for income tax is by no means the only tax you are demanded to pay.

The last of your friends are making excuses why they can’t meet for a coffee, and you resign yourself to a lonely future. Maybe a trip to the mall will pick you up. That has always helped make you feel better, if only momentarily.

That’s a lovely skirt, you think and look at the label. Before you see the size, its origin glares at you. Made in China. You imagine small children, labouring long hours on sewing machines. You put the skirt back and walk out, past the perfume shop that sells poison in bottles, past the fast-food joint where genetically modified products are sold as food, and past all the other stores offering needless things masquerading as must-haves, until you reach your car.

But instead of feeling annoyed or sad, you feel elated. You realise you’ve withdrawn from the temptations consumerism imposes, withdrawn from the false security governments offer, and you know you are truly on your way toward becoming your very own monarch.

Your former friends believe you’ve joined the dark side; they still buy all the ideas the government sells them, but you know with your entire being that there, at that once-unapproachable destination, is the true light. A light so strong, so powerful, it will protect you from the falsehood of what is called reality, a light so pure it will instantly reveal any lie, and a light that merges with your own.

You look at the saying ‘We are all one’ in a different light, and you begin to understand. There, beyond good and evil… as Rumi said. You are on your way to that field beyond, and you understand that love is not an emotion but a state of being.

T'was on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 in Marblehead Massachusetts

Cathy Crystal, a Metaphysician colleague from the University of Metaphysics and I met for lunch at The Barnacle on Front Street in Marblehead, Massachusetts before her return flight to Los Angeles following a visit with her family in Oxford, Connecticut. I picked up a copy of the Marblehead Recorder which is descended from the town's earlier newspaper "The Marblehead Messenger." Seatrain's 3rd record album is named after the paper. ~ JDHWB-R

Hey Joseph, Great news on Tuesday.  I looked up on the internet for a restaurant other than the Landing since I want the whole belly clams and lobster roll, and found that the Barnacle had it, just called...  So, I will leave and be there by 12:00 noon.  I leave the house in CT about 9:00 am... Peace, Love, and Happiness, Cathy Crystal

I confirm that we shall do this! I thus visualize a bubble of White Light surrounding our stated intention to meet in Marblehead for lunch at the Barnacle so the weather will be beautiful on Tuesday, May 12th at 12:00 noon... Namaste', Joseph

Hey Joseph, AND So it is, Cathy Crystal

QEG Free Energy Academy: Re: Dr. Greer's 100K Star Award...

QEG Family’s Response to Dr. Steven Greer $100K Star Award

May 11, 2016 by Valerie Robitaille

This is the QEG family’s official response to Dr. Steven Greer’s most recent UFO and free energy disclosure plans video. It is with great respect for Dr. Greer’s work that we present our response in hopes of working with other free energy inventors and enthusiasts toward ending the secrecy of these subjects.

Throughout the years Dr. Greer has given us a clear and undeniable, behind the scenes look at the military might that has been running the planet for decades, if not much longer. He has taught us how to meditate and enter a state of love and acceptance through his C5 program of contact with ETs. We see that he has devoted much of his time and life to revealing certain detestable truths about the MI complex, black ops, special access programs and the illegal secrecy wrought by corrupt governments.  He has consistently shown concern for the human family by presenting evidence that the people have not been privy to, but need desperately at this time in our history on Earth if we are to effect change on a nearly devastated planet.

It is for these reasons we honor Dr. Greer and wish to respond to the most recent call-out for free energy technology/devices that can now be funded, developed to completion, mass-distributed, and for ALL people of the Earth, not just a select few elite families to control, specifically, the ones responsible for devastating and prolonged poverty, and so much of the horror encompassing the planet today.

We are in the final developmental phase of the QEG; converting the power to loop back and run the motor. It has been a long and sometimes wearisome road for us but with each mistake made and each milestone of development reached, we became stronger. To those who are against this technology being known among the masses, whether the big energy industry or the despicable Internet trolls, it should be clear to see we are not going away. Quite the opposite – we continue to redouble our efforts and are closer than ever to our goal, regardless of severely limited resources and immense obstacles.

Those who know our work know that we are committed to the open-sourced model. As far as we know we were the first to design and opensource the plans for a “closed-loop, free energy device that runs itself, the input charged from the output, putting out usable power as watts, and powering things” (Dr. Greer’s criteria). The QEG is such a machine. However, we see that Dr. Greer’s requirements are exactly the same as they have been for quite some time, regardless that there might be new sponsors aboard. Please watch this short clip HopeGirl did on one of the People’s Free Energy Shows to see the breakdown of the requirements for getting a free energy device submitted:

Link to QEG Family's Response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFX_sTh2fMw

After watching Dr. Greer’s new video (April 2016, Washington, D.C.) and going to the website given, it appears the requirements for submitting a free energy prototype are the same as they were several years ago. We are wondering what the difference is between then and now and if his present contacts are indeed sincere in their agreement “to support the scientists, inventors and technology holders in any way they need to financially.”

Quoting a sentence from the $100,000 Star Challenge: “we have spent many years and over $900,000 traveling the world testing, providing grants to individuals and attempting to find such a device. Many were frauds, others were legitimate- but the inventors wanted to keep the technology secret.”

The QEG family is neither fraudulent nor wanting to keep the plans for our device secret. So we question why we have not been contacted by Dr. Greer in the 2 years we have been on the so-called free energy scene providing opensourced materials. The Internet trolls find us easy enough as our documentation is all over the Internet, and we provide periodic development updates and how-to videos (watch our latest videos:

http://qegfreeenergyacademy.com/qeg-tuning-technical-updates/

http://qegfreeenergyacademy.com/qeg-power-conversion-vars-watts-2016/

James Robitaille says: “In my most recent video you can see I’ve shown the concept of the bi-toroid transformer works for the QEG; it does the phase correction, converting the VARs to watts, and isolates the load from the generator. There is no feedback to the resonance or the output. And these are two very important concepts: the load will not affect the resonance of the generator, and the other feature is that it corrects the 90 degrees-out-of-phase condition, and brings the current and voltage into phase.  This method produces real power (watts) by consuming reactive power (VARs). Utilizing the new bi-toroid transformer now being built, the motor will take real power to self-loop the machine, with additional power left over to run other things. With additional tuning, the QEG is designed to run an average sized home. Continued development and optimization will have many applications.”

We believe the global vision of access to free energy devices is what we have in common with Dr. Greer if this is his true intent. We encourage Dr. Greer and his team to look over our materials, if they haven’t already, and schedule a meeting with us if interested. A major manufacturing company is providing QEG parts, and approximately 150 units (that we know of) are being built worldwide. When complete, both the QEG and the TeslaGenV1, or mini-QEG, can be “independently verified and completely reproducible” by those with the money to make this happen.

Ignoring all the derogatory comments, lies, hate and threats from people who said it couldn’t be done, that we were scammers, etc. etc., this family is actually DOING IT and sharing it with the world. We believe that we have the most heavily trolled and purposely defamed free energy device on the Internet, which we perceive as having touched a nerve of many of the controllers. We have a large selection of educational materials for the DIY engineer unlike anything seen on the subject online. However, as we have shown, it is unreasonable for us to comply with Dr. Greer’s requirements – we simply don’t have those kinds of funds after our long and expensive journey bringing this technology to THE PEOPLE.

So in full transparency, we invite a meeting with Dr. Greer and his team if anything is different than in the past for submitting to the $100,000 Star Challenge. The most important considerations for us are, in Dr. Greer’s words, “to opensource the plans to the public free of cost, no patenting and no secrets, so that the world can quickly adopt the technology and pull us away from the precipice that we (humanity) are plunging down.”

Thank you.

THE FLIGHT OF ICARUS THROUGH CYBERSPACE...

ICARUS (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

In Greek mythology, Icarus (the Latin spelling, conventionally adopted in English; Ancient Greek: Ἴκαρος, Íkaros, Etruscan: Vikare[1]) is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus, the creator of the Labyrinth. Often depicted in art, Icarus and his father attempt to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Icarus' father warns him first of complacency and then of hubris, asking that he fly neither too low nor too high, so the sea's dampness would not clog his wings or the sun's heat melt them. Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly too close to the sun, whereupon the wax in his wings melted and he fell into the sea. This tragic theme of failure at the hands of hubris contains similarities to that of Phaëthon.

Anonymous Takes 9 Central Banks Offline — Unleashes Massive Assault on ‘Global Banking Cartel’

After a global call to arms, the Anonymous campaign against the global banking industry, OpIcarus seems to be gaining major momentum, as eight more financial institutions have been taken down after the initial attack on the Central Bank of Greece – followed by a similar DDoS attack on the Central Bank of Cyprus.

According to a video released in conjunction with OpIcarus, the attack on Bank of Greece marked the beginning of a “30-day campaign against central bank sites across the world.” This massive push, according to the video, aims to “strike at the heart of [the] empire by once again throw[ing] a wrench into the machine.”

In some of the most recent attacks over the weekend, hackers reportedly targeted the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, the Dutch Central Bank, the Central Bank of Maldives, and Guernsey Financial Services Commission, according to the official @OpIcarus Twitter account.

The National Bank of Panama and the Central Bank of Kenya were also reportedly targeted a day later, according to hacking news publication HackRead.

What began as an Anonymous operation has now become a joint op between Anonymous and the GhostSquadHackers, with reported GSH member, s1ege tweeting about taking the Central Bank of Bosnia-Herzegovina offline and providing a screenshot to verify.

The twitter account @BannedOffline also reported the Central Bank of Mexico had succumbed to a DDoS attack by the hacking collective.

Anonymous has released a list of institutions the collective plans to target, which is divided into four sections; websites associated with the U.S. Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), sites owned by the World Bank, and over 150 sites associated with national banks around the globe.

Thus far, in less than a week, OpIcarus hackers have now hit ten of the financial institutions they’ve listed in an online manifesto, but questions remain as to whether these elite hackers will be able to bypass the intense security measures of the more prestigious institutions on their target list.
