U.S. Congress Disrupted for Certifying the 2016 Election Results

A very brief update: Renaldo, Tania, and Ryan are free and out of jail! After disrupting Congress yesterday for certifying the most undemocratic election in modern American history, our three democracy defenders were detained and arrested by Capitol Police. They were released yesterday evening with a misdemeanor charge.

Their brave act of nonviolent civil disobedience struck another public blow to Trump's legitimacy and mandate and provided an important opportunity to highlight the critical issue of massive voter suppression in our elections. Hundreds of thousands of people watched, listened to, or read about why three citizens and seven members of the House of Representatives objected to the results of the 2016 presidential election.

That is the power of nonviolent action: to shine a light on what those in power would rather keep concealed and to force the political weather to shift so that we can make progress towards real democracy.

Thank you to everyone who made calls to their members of Congress, who showed up in solidarity in DC, or who contributed to support Renaldo, Tania, and Ryan. It is everyday people who will form the resistance to Trump's anti-democratic agenda and who will be the force that can transform our corrupt political system so that it works for all people, not just a handful of billionaires.

Onwards together,

Curt and the Democracy Spring Team
