Joseph waits at Union Station in Springfield, MA for a bus transfer...
I traveled by Peter Pan & Greyhound bus from Amherst Center, Massachusetts to Jacksonville, Florida on June 12th and was met by Kimberly, Theresa's daughter, at the bus terminal in Jacksonville where she met me and then drove me by car to her mother's house in Pomona Park, FL. After staying awake on the bus ride down the US East Coast from Massachusetts for well past 36 hours, I crashed in her guest room upon my arrival in order to catch up on sleep.
Theresa is working on patchwork coat project during my visit...
Theresa, a friend I have known since the time I was working as a dishwasher at the Jared Coffin House on Nantucket, is creating a "Coat of Many Colors," similar to the one Jacob had made for Joseph, as recorded in the Book of Genesis. This commission project began in 1982, one year before legally changing my name to combine my name given at birth, Joseph David Bryan, with an adopted name from childhood, Henry Ware Royster, to hybrid form represented by a monogram design I created the year Theresa started to sew the coat for me. The next year, in 1983, I legally combined a dichotomy of identity into the hybrid name I AM known as now: Joseph David Henry Ware Bryan-Royster.
Theresa assembles my "Coat of Many Colors" in her Florida Canvas Shop...
On Wednesday, 6/27/18, Theresa & I did our exhange of my painting of the Sirius Stone Circle Sanctuary for her handmade "coat of many colors." This exchange has been in the works since 1982, when she began to sew this coat for me & I was to paint her dog, Popoli, sitting in a rowboat tied to dock at Long Pond, near Madaket on Nantucket Island. Theresa & I had lost contact for many years, then when I saw the partial patchwork lining of coat at her 50th Birthday party on 10/19/99 (held at the Overlook Hotel in Nantucket), I later chose a subject for exchange painting as her dog, Popoli, was long gone. I moved to Sirius Community & decided upon the Stone Circle as subject for the painting... Both Coat & Painting are complete now! I end Patchwork Tour with a bus trip back up the U.S. east coast to Amherst, MA.
Joseph is wearing his Patchwork Coat for the 1st time upon its completion...
